Harare Travel Guide

INTRODUCTION:

Harare is one of the important African cities and is a capital city of Zimbabwe. With the population up to 1.9 million in the city and 3 million in it metropolitan area; the city is happening and busy. The city of Harare was founded by Cecil Rhodes in 1890; actually founded by him and his companions. The former name of the city was Salisbury; today, the city is known as Harare. The capital city received its new name back in the 1982.

Harare is located in the central northeastern part of Zimbabwe and is 1,500 meters above sea level. It is also known as the administrative and commercial hub of the country. Zimbabwe has many tourists attraction in its other regions but Harare is not considered as an absolute tourist destination. However, the city has a few attractions and many tourists do spend their vacations here.  

Harare has an international airport where, tourists land and all major airlines serve the airport. Cheap flights to Harare are widely served by all major airlines – these can be booked via telephone or internet. Tourists save their money by booking indirect Harare flights; money can also be saved if the flights are booked in advance. In order to promote tourism in the country, many airlines including the national carrier are offering very affordable air tickets to the travelers.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:

The city has a historical heritage and is highly appreciated by the visitors. There are many old buildings in Harare which are carefully preserved and admired by historians. Tourists mainly visit a few places in Harare which include African Unity Square, Anglican Cathedral, Gallery Delta, Lion & Cheetah Park, the National Gallery, the Queen Victoria Museum and the Queen Victoria National Library. The National Gallery in Harare is popular amongst art lovers and tourists; the gallery boasts many valuable collections – the brilliant Shona soft-stone carvings are the most impressive items in the gallery. In the National Archives, tourists get to see the prestigious collections in Rhodesiana and Africana in the form of diaries and notebooks. Visitors also get to witness the great works done by the African explorers and discoverers. Nature lovers usually visit the Mukuvisi Woodlands; visitors get to see a great variety of birds and wild animals here. These include giraffe, zebra, impala, tsessche, wildebeest, bushbuck, steenbuck, reed buck and eland.

Quarter 1:

Weather in Harare in January is amongst the warmer ones having 16 degrees Celsius average minimum temperature. The average maximum temperature in Harare in the first month of January reaches up to 26 degrees Celsius and during this month the city experiences 6.3 average sunlight hours everyday. The minimum temperature that the city sees in the month of February is around 16 degrees Celsius while the maximum reaches up to 26 degree Celsius. Harare sees 6.4 sunlight hours per day during the second month of the year. The minimum temperature in March gets a bit chilly, falling down at 14 degrees Celsius but has the same maximum temperatures as the first two months of the year have i.e. 26 degrees Celsius. However, the average sunlight hours per day during March are 6.9 hours with 72% relative humidity.

Quarter 2:

During the month of April, Harare’s temperature drops to the minimum at around 12 degrees Celsius whereas the highest temperature reaches up to 25 degrees Celsius. The city sees 8.2 hours of sunlight every day during April. Weather in Harare in May is pleasant having 9 degrees Celsius minimum temperature while the maximum goes up to 23 degrees Celsius. The weather provides Harare with 8.6 sunlight hours per day in the month of May with 58% of humidity. As the month of June arrives, the weather conditions of the city become chillier comprising 7 degrees Celsius average minimum temperature. The highest temperature that the city sees during June is 21 degrees Celsius.

Quarter 3:

The month of July is the coldest month of the year. The minimum temperature during this month is around 7 degrees Celsius making is the lowest of the year. However, the maximum temperature reaches over 21 degrees Celsius. During August, the lower temperature is 8 degrees Celsius while the highest is 23 degrees Celsius with 9.4 hours of daylight every day. The minimum temperature that Harare sees in the month of September is about 12 degrees Celsius and the highest is 27 degrees Celsius. The locals get to enjoy 9.4 hours of sunlight per day in September.

Quarter 4:

The temperatures in Harare gradually increase as October arrives. The city sees the lowest temperature in this month at around 15 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature is 29 degrees Celsius. Weather in Harare in November is amongst the warmest having 15 degrees Celsius as its lowest and 27 degrees Celsius as its highest temperature. The average sunlight hours per day during November are 6.9hrs with 57% of humidity. The lowest temperature in December is around 16 degrees Celsius providing 5.8 hours of sunlight usually per day. Harare sees the maximum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius with 68% of relative moisture.
